Accessing paid training is now within reach of any working professional in France, whether you are an employee, an independent consultant, or in the middle of a career change. Upskilling while continuing to earn an income is no longer a privilege reserved for large corporations: publicly funded schemes are available to everyone, provided you know where to look. This guide walks you through the main options and explains why wage portage is one of the most favourable frameworks for financing professional development.

Key takeaways:

  • France offers more than five schemes that allow you to train while receiving a salary or allowance.
  • The CPF (Personal Training Account) accumulates rights from your very first working hour and can fund accredited courses with no impact on your monthly pay.
  • Wage portage grants the same training rights as a standard employment contract, while preserving the freedom of self-employment.

What is paid training?

Paid training refers to any learning programme during which the participant receives a salary, allowance, or stipend, instead of, or in addition to, their usual pay. This compensation may come from the employer, the State, the unemployment insurance fund (France Travail), or a sectoral training fund (OPCO).

  • Training during working hours: the employer maintains full pay and covers course costs through the skills development plan or OPCO funding.
  • Training outside working hours: the employee draws on CPF credits or receives an individual training grant (AIF) from France Travail or a regional body.

In both cases, the goal is to ensure that the need to train never becomes a financial barrier for the worker.

The main paid training schemes in France

The Personal Training Account (CPF)

Launched in 2015, the CPF is topped up in euros from the very first hour worked (€500/year up to €5,000; €800/year up to €8,000 for low-skilled workers). Every active worker - including ported employees - can use these credits to fund accredited or RNCP-recognised courses. CPF training does not interrupt the employment contract: you keep your position and suffer no loss of earnings.

The skills development plan

Companies have a legal duty to maintain their employees’ employability. Through the skills development plan, they can fund training during working hours with full pay maintained, with costs partly or fully reimbursed by the relevant OPCO.

The Individual Training Grant (AIF)

The AIF is awarded by France Travail to job-seekers whose training is not CPF-eligible or cannot be funded otherwise. It covers course fees and can be combined with unemployment benefit (ARE), allowing you to train while still receiving your allowance.

Professionalisation contracts and apprenticeships

These contracts combine classroom learning with on-the-job practice, paying a salary set as a percentage of the minimum wage. They lead to a nationally recognised diploma or professional title, making them ideal for career changers.

Wage portage is often seen purely as a flexible, independent-friendly status. But it also offers significant advantages for professional development. As a ported employee, you benefit from:

  • CPF top-ups: every month worked under a portage arrangement generates CPF rights exactly as a permanent contract would.
  • OPCO co-funding access: your portage company, as your legal employer, contributes to an OPCO (usually OPCO Atlas for consulting). You can apply for co-funding for skills-related courses.
  • Full social protection: health insurance, disability cover, and supplementary pension remain active throughout any training period, unlike with a micro-enterprise status.
  • Training expense deductibility: training costs can be charged to your professional expense account within the portage structure, reducing your net charge base. Learn more in our article on professional expenses in wage portage.

Unlike a freelancer operating as a micro-entrepreneur, a ported employee does not have to fund training alone. The portage company’s social infrastructure unlocks collective rights normally reserved for large-company employees.

How to access paid training in practice

  1. Identify your training need: choose an RNCP-accredited course to maximise your chances of CPF funding.
  2. Check your CPF balance: log in to moncompteformation.gouv.fr to see your available credits.
  3. Contact your OPCO: ask about priority courses in your sector and available co-funding.
  4. Apply for an AIF if needed: if you are a job-seeker and CPF doesn’t cover your course, your France Travail adviser can trigger an AIF.
  5. Schedule with your portage company: in wage portage, simply inform your company and build the training period into your mission schedule.

Using a Career Evolution Adviser (CEP) - a free, State-funded service - is highly recommended to navigate the various schemes and optimise your funding plan.

Key points to remember

  • Paid training: training without losing income is possible in France through several complementary schemes, CPF, skills plans, AIF, and professionalisation contracts.
  • CPF: every professional accumulates training credits from their first working hour; these fund accredited courses with no impact on monthly pay.
  • Wage portage: this status grants the same training rights as a permanent contract, CPF, OPCO access, and expense deductibility, while preserving freelance independence.
  • Planning: a solid application requires an RNCP-accredited course, a CPF balance check, and a CEP adviser.
  • Weepo: choosing wage portage with Weepo unlocks full social protection and training rights from your very first mission.
