Your client wants proof of insurance before signing the assignment letter, and you're not sure you should pay for it. Most IT freelancers hit this wall in their first week.
Professional liability insurance for an IT consultant isn't required by law, but most clients ask for it before they sign. Expect to pay €150 to €300 a year for basic cover, with a ceiling close to your annual revenue.

No. No professional insurance is legally required in IT, because these jobs aren't regulated professions like doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, construction or security. The real constraint comes from the service contract, not the law, according to the Free-Work guide to insurance for IT freelancers (April 2026).
In practice it's a contractual must. Most IT services firms, large accounts and freelance platforms ask for a certificate before signing. Without it, the signature can slip while you scramble for a policy.
A micro-entrepreneur in IT has no legal duty either, yet clients apply the same rule as with a company. The broker Coover notes that a micro-entrepreneur consultant can get lower rates.
For an IT consultant, base cover runs about €150 to €300 a year depending on the broker. The exact price depends on your declared activity, revenue, ceiling and deductible. Here are the ranges published by two public sources.
| Cover | Indicative price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Basic liability (IT freelancer) | €150 to €200 a year | Free-Work, April 2026 |
| Consultant liability | €175 to €300 a year | Coover |
| IT consultant liability | €180 to €250 a year | Coover |
| IT services firm liability | €225 a year | Coover |
| Multi-risk business policy | about €300 to €310 a year | Free-Work, Coover |
| Cyber (optional) | €350 a year | Coover |
Five things move a consultant's premium: the declared activity, real or forecast revenue, optional covers such as legal protection, the deductible and the indemnity ceilings. These are broker figures, so treat them as indicative and ask for a quote.
IT liability insurance pays for damage you cause a client during an assignment: poor advice, late delivery, a major bug after a release, accidental disclosure of confidential data or a transmitted virus.
Watch out for generalist policies: some exclude damage linked to data, software or cybersecurity. For an IT freelancer the most useful cover is non-consequential intangible damage, which handles for example a coding error that wipes a client's data. Read the exclusion list before you sign.
Ideally the ceiling is at least your annual revenue. Take the median revenue in the WEEPO Barometer (20,000 payslips): €10,260 a month, or €123,120 a year. A €180 policy then costs €15 a month, about 0.15% of that revenue. For an IT services firm, Coover recommends a ceiling of at least €100,000.
Compare three quotes with the same declared activity and the same ceilings, then ask your insurer for the certificate before you send it to the client. Judge a policy on precise criteria, not on the yearly price alone.
An independent consultant who understates the real activity risks a refused claim. To weigh this against setting up a company, read our comparison of wage portage or SASU, which also covers the costs to plan for.
In wage portage, liability cover is funded by complementary fees rather than a premium you negotiate alone. At WEEPO those fees are 2% (professional liability, occupational health, factoring and financial guarantee, CVAE), on top of 3% management fees capped at €550 per assignment. Portage is governed by the French Labour Code (articles L1254-1 and following).
On the median revenue of €10,260 a month, 3% management fees come to €307.80 (the €550 cap isn't reached) and 2% complementary fees come to €205.20. Those 2% cover several items, not just insurance, so you can only compare line by line with a standalone €15 a month policy. The details sit on the WEEPO pricing page and in the Zero Hidden Fees label awarded by Fedep's.
The mandatory insurances for portage employees are explained on the site. Always check the ceilings and exclusions with your portage company, as you would with a personal policy. For the company's own safeguards, see our article on the financial guarantee in wage portage. To price the other costs, our guide to professional expenses in wage portage lays out the amounts.
The WEEPO Barometer shows a median day rate of €526 (half of consultants between €450 and €600) and a median net salary of €4,200 a month. To convert your own rate, use our method for turning a day rate into net salary, then browse the 2026 portage barometer.
To place your profile, see also our guide to the IT consultant's status, day rate and pay. It compares every option, with wage portage as the alternative to a company.

No, the law doesn't require it for IT jobs, but most clients (IT services firms, large accounts) ask for a certificate before signing the service contract.
Between €150 and €300 a year for basic cover according to the brokers we checked (Free-Work, Coover). The final quote depends on revenue, deductible and ceiling.
Ideally a ceiling at least equal to your annual revenue. For an IT services firm, Coover recommends at least €100,000.
That depends on the contract: some generalist policies exclude damage linked to data and software. Check the non-consequential intangible damage cover before you buy.
At WEEPO, professional liability is part of the 2% complementary fees, alongside occupational health, factoring, the financial guarantee and CVAE. Check the ceilings and exclusions in your contract.
