IT Consultant in France: Status, Day Rate and Pay 2026

Want to work as an IT consultant without spending ten years on an ESN payroll? Several routes exist, and the easiest one isn't always the one you hear about first. Here's how they compare, with numbers.

An IT consultant is a specialist who works for a client to design, deploy or secure an information system, on a fixed-term assignment. You can be an ESN employee, a freelancer or a salaried porté, with a median day rate of €526 among WEEPO consultants.

What does an IT consultant actually do every day?

An IT consultant advises first, then delivers. They audit what exists, frame a need, build, integrate or run a project, then hand it over. An assignment lasts from a few weeks to several months, at an end client or through an ESN, with a clear scope and deliverables.

IT consultant, freelance or ESN employee?

Inside an ESN you're an employee, and the firm bills your assignment at a daily rate higher than what it pays you. As a freelancer you invoice clients directly and keep the margin, but you handle your status, insurance and prospecting. The full trade-offs are in our guide to compare wage portage and the ESN model.

Which jobs hide behind the title?

The label covers very different profiles: senior developer, cloud architect, cybersecurity expert, data engineer, project manager or SAP consultant. What they share is rare expertise sold by the day. To place each family of jobs, read the overview of IT jobs and average pay.

How do you become an IT consultant in France?

You become an IT consultant with solid technical experience, built in a company or an ESN. Clients pay for expertise they can check: a mastered technology, delivered projects, references. A degree opens the door, but successful assignments keep it open.

When you aim at freelancing, a cloud, security, SAP or Scrum certification often weighs more than one more degree, because buyers filter on technology. The Onisep job sheet describes an outside specialist who brings knowledge to clients that want their systems to evolve.

A freelancer's CV gets read in thirty seconds. Three blocks are enough: the tech stack on top, recent assignments with a concrete result (budget, users, deadline), then the industry context. Skip the list of forty tools.

How much does an IT consultant earn?

An IT consultant's pay depends mostly on status and day rate. The WEEPO 2026 Barometer, built on 20,000 payslips of salaried consultants, shows a median day rate of €526, a median turnover of €10,260 a month and a median net salary of €4,200 a month. These are medians for portés, so read them as a benchmark.

Indicator (WEEPO Barometer 2026)Median
Day rate€526 (half of consultants between €450 and €600)
Monthly turnover€10,260
Monthly net salary€4,200
Time in portage29 months

Between €10,260 invoiced and €4,200 paid out sit the management fees, employee and employer contributions, and reimbursed business expenses. To see how it works, read how to turn your day rate into net salary.

Which status should an IT consultant choose in 2026?

Four statuses are possible: micro-entreprise, EURL, SASU or wage portage. The right one depends on your day rate, billed days and need for social protection. Above €500 a day, a micro-entreprise hits its ceiling fast, while portage avoids setting up a company.

In 2026 the micro-entreprise ceiling for liberal services is €83,600 of yearly turnover, according to Legifiscal. At the €526 median day rate, you reach it after about 159 billed days, before the end of a full-time year. The VAT-exemption threshold for services (€37,500) comes even sooner, around 71 days.

Whatever you pick, the Urssaf and Service-Public Entreprendre websites remain the reference for declaration and contribution rules.

What changes with wage portage for an IT consultant?

Wage portage lets an IT consultant invoice clients while staying an employee, with no company to create. The portage firm signs the client contract, issues invoices and pays a salary, with a payslip, contributions and employee protection.

On costs, WEEPO applies 3% management fees, capped at €550 per assignment, plus 2% additional fees (professional liability insurance, occupational health, factoring and financial guarantee, CVAE). Take a purely illustrative consultant at €550 a day billing 20 days: €11,000 of turnover. The 3% comes to €330, well under the €550 cap, and the 2% to €220.

A pay framework applies too. The collective agreement (IDCC 3219) sets a minimum salary of 75% of the PMSS for a senior consultant and 85% for an expert, full-time. With a 2026 PMSS of €4,005, that means €3,003.75 and €3,404.25 a month. WEEPO accepts day rates from €300 excluding VAT, and holds the "Zéro Frais Cachés" label issued by the Fedep's.

Do IT consultants need professional insurance?

Many clients ask for professional liability insurance before signing with an IT consultant. A configuration error, a security flaw or a late delivery can engage their liability. Freelancers buy the cover themselves; in portage, it's part of the additional fees.

Read the exclusions, ceilings and deductible before you sign. In the contract, check the scope, deliverables, duration, day rate, intellectual property, confidentiality and liability cap. Watch your autonomy too: a client giving orders and fixed hours looks like subordination, which is a problem for a freelancer.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an IT consultant earn?

It varies with status, technology and day rate. Among WEEPO's salaried consultants, the median net salary is €4,200 a month for a median day rate of €526.

How do you become an IT consultant without an ESN?

You need recognised expertise, a few references and a status to invoice: micro-entreprise, company or wage portage. A client network or matching platforms help land the first assignments.

Which status suits a freelance IT consultant?

It depends on your day rate. Above €500 a day, a micro-entreprise hits its ceiling quickly, so EURL, SASU or wage portage make more sense, depending on whether you want to run a company or stay an employee.

Can an IT consultant use wage portage?

Yes, it's the most common profile: 85% of WEEPO's salaried consultants are tech profiles. The minimum day rate accepted is €300 excluding VAT.
