Comparing statuses and wondering what people really earn in wage portage? The numbers are public, and they tell a more nuanced story than any simulator. Here is the latest industry report, read with a consultant's eye.
Wage portage salaries average €30,663 gross a year in 2023, or €40.5 gross per hour, according to the 2026 wage portage industry report, built on Insee data. That average hides big gaps by hours worked, gender and region.

A portage employee earns €30,663 gross a year on average in 2023, up from €27,396 in 2022 (+12%). On a full-time equivalent basis, gross pay reaches €73,908. The gap comes from working time: the average employee declares 756 hours a year, far from full time.
Key figures from the 2026 industry report (Insee 2023 data):
Average annual gross pay has doubled in eight years. It's not only higher rates: the share of executives, mission length and declared hours have all grown, which pulls the average up.
| Year | Average annual gross pay |
|---|---|
| 2015 | €15,590 |
| 2019 | €20,135 |
| 2021 | €23,414 |
| 2022 | €27,396 |
| 2023 | €30,663 |
Pay is widely spread: 31% of portage employees earn over €40,000 gross a year, while 34% earn under €10,000. The brackets mostly reflect activity volume, from the full-time consultant to someone who invoices a few days.
| Annual gross pay bracket | Share of employees |
|---|---|
| €40,000 and above | 31% |
| €30,000 to €40,000 | 9% |
| €22,000 to €30,000 | 8% |
| €15,000 to €22,000 | 9% |
| €10,000 to €15,000 | 8% |
| €7,000 to €10,000 | 6% |
| €4,000 to €7,000 | 8% |
| Under €4,000 | 20% |
The gap reaches 28% on annual gross pay (€24,315 versus €33,998) but falls to 11% on hourly gross pay (€37.2 versus €41.9). Much of the annual gap comes from working time: 653 hours a year for women, 811 for men.
Women make up 34% of portage employees (15,647 people). The hourly gap shrinks every year: 15% in 2021, 12% in 2022, 11% in 2023.
| 2023 indicator | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Average annual gross pay | €24,315 | €33,998 |
| Average hourly gross pay | €37.2 | €41.9 |
| Hours worked a year | 653 h | 811 h |
| Share under €10,000 gross | 43% | 30% |
| Share above €40,000 gross | 22% | 35% |
Portage employees are best paid in Île-de-France, at €36,419 gross a year on average, about €10,000 more than elsewhere. The region holds 52% of the sector's payroll for 44% of its headcount. Regional pay is heavily shaped by the Paris market.
Outside Île-de-France, averages sit around €26,100. The main regions show a second group near €30,000 in Hauts-de-France and a bottom near €23,000. If you work in Paris, the wage portage in Île-de-France page explains how it works locally.
| Region | Average annual gross pay 2023 |
|---|---|
| Île-de-France | €36,419 |
| Hauts-de-France | €30,060 |
| Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur | €27,901 |
| Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes | €26,306 |
| Occitanie | €25,365 |
| Brittany | €23,114 |
| Bourgogne-Franche-Comté | €22,876 |
For an IT consultant, the sector average underestimates what you'll earn: it mixes full-time work with occasional activity. The WEEPO 2026 Barometer, built on 20,000 payslips of portage consultants, shows a median day rate of €526 and a median net salary of €4,200 a month.
Take a developer at €526 a day, the Barometer median: median monthly revenue sits around €10,260. The €4,200 net a month is that of a consultant in continuous activity, far above the industry report's annual average. The gap comes from volume: a full-time consultant on a long mission doesn't look like the average portage employee.
The collective agreement also sets a floor: with a 2026 PMSS of €4,005, the minimum salary for a full-time senior consultant is 75% of PMSS, or €3,003.75 gross a month, and 85% for an expert (€3,404.25). Details are in our guide to the minimum salary in wage portage 2026.
To go from day rate to net pay, see daily rate to net salary. If you're weighing a single-person company, compare wage portage or SASU at a €500 day rate. Pay rules are set in the wage portage collective agreement, and freelancing numbers more broadly in our freelance statistics for France.

Want to run your own numbers? Portage should be compared with your real situation: enter your day rate and worked days in the net salary calculation in wage portage, then look at management fees: 3% capped at €550 per mission, plus 2% of additional fees.
Pay data comes from social declarations analysed by Insee for 2023 and reproduced in the 2026 wage portage industry report. The report notes that the number of portage employees is probably underestimated. WEEPO Barometer figures cover WEEPO portage consultants only.

In 2023, a portage employee earns €30,663 gross a year and €40.5 gross per hour on average. The annual figure is pulled down by the part-time activity of many employees. At full-time equivalent, the average reaches €73,908 gross.
It is 28% on annual gross pay and 11% on hourly gross pay. Women declare fewer hours (653 versus 811 a year), which explains most of the annual gap.
No. The sector average includes many occasional activities. The WEEPO Barometer, focused on consultants on mission, shows a median net salary of €4,200 a month for a median day rate of €526.
It depends on your day rate and number of days. For a consultant on regular missions, portage offers an executive salary, full social protection and no admin to run yourself. The simulator gives the exact figure for your rate.
