Léa just signed her first work contract with her wage portage company. Three weeks later, a gray payment card showed up in her mailbox: her Swile card. She wasn't quite sure what it was for, or how to use it without making a mistake.
The Swile card in wage portage is a digital meal voucher that your umbrella company tops up every month to help cover your food costs. It works like a regular payment card, with a daily cap of 25 euros, at restaurants and food shops that accept it.
This card has replaced the old paper meal voucher booklets. For a salarié porté (a wage portage employee), it's a real extra benefit, partly funded by the portage company and partly deducted from your own billed fees. Understanding how it works saves you from a few unpleasant surprises at the end of the month.
Swile is a French company that issues payment cards dedicated to employee benefits, meal vouchers in particular. In wage portage, it's your portage company that opens the Swile account in your name and tops it up every month, based on an amount you choose within URSSAF limits.
Technically, the card works contactless or with a PIN, just like a Visa or Mastercard. It's linked to a mobile app that shows your available balance, your payment history, and nearby shops that accept it. Some portage companies, Weepo included, let you pick between several providers (Swile, Edenred, Up Coop), though Swile has been one of the most common choices since 2022.
The amount credited to your Swile card depends on how many days you worked that month and the face value you chose for each voucher, usually between 9 and 14.64 euros. In 2026, the employer-exempt contribution cap is 7.32 euros per voucher, up from 7.26 euros in 2025.
Say you work 20 days in a month and your portage company sets the voucher value at 12 euros: you'd get roughly 240 euros loaded onto your card. Part of that amount is covered by the portage company (50% to 60%, depending on the split you agreed on), and the rest comes out of your own billed revenue. So it's not free money exactly. It's a tax-optimization mechanism that lowers your social contributions while covering your meals.
This exemption cap gets revised every year through the Social Security Financing Act. To stay compliant, the employer's share needs to sit between 50% and 60% of the voucher's face value, without going above 7.32 euros. Anything beyond that gets taxed as regular income.
The Swile card is accepted at nearly every restaurant, bakery, supermarket (for food items), and meal-delivery app in France. The daily spending cap sits at 25 euros, following the purchasing power law of August 16, 2022, up from 19 euros before that.
One detail that catches new portage employees off guard: Sundays and public holidays are blocked by default. Unless your employer has activated a specific weekend option for jobs that require weekend work (hospitality, events, retail), the card simply won't authorize a payment on those days. That daily cap increase comes straight from the purchasing power law of August 16, 2022. If you go over the daily cap, the Swile app often lets the difference roll over to your regular bank card automatically, handy when a client lunch runs a bit pricier than usual.
In practice, people use their Swile card for:
For a portage employee, the Swile card almost always beats the paper format: no more queuing at the tobacconist, payments down to the cent, and unused balances carry over until the end of February the following year instead of expiring fast.
The paper format still has its fans though, especially among workers who like keeping their food budget strictly separate from everything else. Here's a quick comparison to help you decide.
| Criteria | Swile card | Paper meal voucher |
|---|---|---|
| Daily cap | 25 euros, with optional bank card top-up | 25 euros, no way to go over |
| Change given | Exact payment, down to the cent | No change given on a paper voucher |
| Validity | Until February 28 of year N+2 | Until the end of the following month, with limited carryover |
| Weekend use | Blocked unless the option is activated | Blocked unless the option is activated |
| Day-to-day management | Mobile app, real-time balance | Physical booklet to carry around |
According to URSSAF, the exemption rules are strictly identical between the two formats. So the choice really comes down to convenience, and most wage portage companies have shifted to the digital format over the past few years.
At Weepo, activating your Swile card takes just a few minutes from your online consultant portal: you pick the voucher's face value, the request gets processed within 48 hours, and the physical card arrives by mail within 5 to 10 business days.
Once the card arrives, you activate it through the Swile app using the code provided. The first top-up usually happens the month after your first billed assignment, once the portage company has worked out how many eligible days you've clocked. If you change your mind partway through your contract, you can pause or reactivate the option anytime from your personal dashboard, at no extra cost.
No, it's not. It's an option you can activate or skip with your portage company. Some consultants prefer to opt out and bill their meals as actual business expenses instead, especially when traveling to a client site.
Any unused balance stays on your card. Unlike paper vouchers, which expire fast, the Swile card keeps your funds available until February 28 of the year following the one they were issued, under the rules that apply to meal vouchers.
Not by default, unless your portage company has activated the weekend option with Swile for the relevant roles. That option stays fairly rare in standard wage portage, where assignments mostly happen on weekdays.
You can freeze the card straight from the Swile app in a few seconds, then contact your portage company to order a replacement. Your balance stays intact and gets transferred to the new card.
Yes, but only for food items meant to be eaten right away or shortly after purchase (ready meals, fruit, dairy products), based on the category list set by regulation, which you can check on service-public.fr.
