Freelance DevOps in France: Day Rate and Status 2026

Thomas has six years in infrastructure and a comfortable permanent job. A client now offers him a mission at €700 a day (an illustrative case, not a WEEPO client). Tempting, except that selling price is not what lands in his account at the end of the month.

A freelance DevOps engineer bills around €600 a day in 2026, within a range of €500 to €950 depending on experience and specialty. The status you pick (micro-entreprise, SASU or wage portage) then changes a lot about what you keep.

What day rate for a freelance DevOps in 2026?

The median DevOps day rate (TJM) for a freelance DevOps engineer, cloud engineer or SRE sits around €600 a day in 2026, within a €500 to €950 range. These benchmarks come from the 2026 day rate grid from Freelance Solution, built on TJMètre and Jobbers data. The spread mostly reflects experience, specialty and location.

SpecialtyJunior (0 to 3 years)Mid-level (4 to 7 years)Senior (7+ years)
Kubernetes / platform engineering€500 to €630€650 to €850€850 to €1,100
Cloud engineer (AWS, GCP, Azure)€480 to €600€620 to €820€820 to €1,050
SRE€520 to €650€680 to €900€900 to €1,200

These ranges are indicative and apply to Paris or fully remote work. Outside Paris, the same grid takes off 10 to 15%.

Freelance DevOps rates: junior, mid-level or senior

A junior starts between €480 and €650 depending on specialty. A mid-level profile climbs to €620 to €900, and a senior goes beyond €820, up to €1,200 for an SRE. Nobody bills the top of the grid on a first mission: your rate builds up with your references.

Freelance DevOps Kubernetes or cloud: what the market pays

At equal seniority, Kubernetes and platform engineering pay a notch above classic cloud administration, and SRE stays at the top. In the 2026 Hays study relayed by Blog du Modérateur (over 2,500 professionals), a cloud architect in Paris goes from €580 (0 to 3 years) to €780 (8 years and more).

To put these numbers in context, the WEEPO 2026 Barometer draws on 20,000 payslips of ported consultants, 85% of them tech profiles: the median day rate is €526 and half of consultants bill between €450 and €600. For a broader benchmark, our article on what day rate to set in wage portage explains how to price yourself.

DevOps salary on a permanent contract or day rate: what to compare?

A day rate is not a salary: it is a price excluding VAT that must cover your days without a mission, your expenses and your social protection. The right comparison sets your average monthly net over the year against a permanent salary, not a day rate against a gross figure.

Thomas, at €700 a day and 18 billed days, makes €12,600 in revenue for the month. Over twelve months, holidays, gaps between missions and prospecting often pull the average down. To go from rate to net pay, the calculation is detailed in our guide on converting a TJM into net salary.

Which status to become a freelance DevOps?

A freelance DevOps can choose between micro-entreprise, SASU and wage portage, and a high day rate quickly rules out the micro-entreprise. The 2026 revenue cap is €83,600 for services and liberal professions according to service-public.fr, which is about 129 billed days at €650 a day.

Freelance DevOps in a micro-entreprise: the cap arrives fast

The VAT exemption disappears even earlier than the micro cap: €37,500 for services, with a higher tolerance threshold of €41,250, according to the Superindep guide. Our article on the 2026 micro-entreprise threshold explains what happens if you go over.

Freelance DevOps in a SASU: more freedom, but no unemployment cover

A company gives you room to optimise pay, at the price of bookkeeping and fixed costs. To compare both routes in detail, read SASU or auto-entrepreneur.

DevOps in wage portage: what changes for a freelancer

In wage portage, a DevOps engineer sets their own day rate and picks missions, but receives a salary with unemployment, pension and health cover, and no billing cap. The portage company signs the contract with the client, invoices and pays the salary, within the framework set by the ordinance of 2 April 2015.

At WEEPO, fees are 3% management fees, capped at €550 per mission, plus 2% in additional fees (professional liability insurance, occupational health, factoring and financial guarantee, CVAE). On Thomas's €12,600 a month, that comes to €630 (€378 plus €252), leaving €11,970 before contributions. Portage therefore costs more in fees than a micro-entreprise, in exchange for employee-level coverage.

The IDCC 3219 collective agreement sets a salary floor: 75% of the PMSS for a senior consultant (€3,003.75 gross per month full-time) and 85% for an expert (€3,404.25), with a 2026 PMSS of €4,005. It also provides a 10% financial reserve on permanent contracts. WEEPO accepts day rates from €300 excluding VAT and holds the Zero Hidden Fees label awarded by the Fedep's. To compare without bias, the wage portage or freelance page lays out the differences point by point.

How to find a freelance DevOps mission?

To land a freelance DevOps mission, combine three channels: your network of former colleagues, mission platforms, and the IT services firms or consultancies that place consultants. A senior freelance DevOps consultant often goes through their network, while a first-time freelancer saves time with platforms.

Job ads almost always ask for the same base: Linux, scripting, Terraform, Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, monitoring with Prometheus or Grafana, and one major cloud. CKA or AWS Solutions Architect certifications reassure a client. To go further on prospecting, see how to find freelance missions, and keep an eye on the most in-demand IT skills.

Remote freelance DevOps work is now common, since many missions run part-time or fully remote. Check the planned length, the notice at the end of a mission and on-call duties before signing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the freelance DevOps day rate in 2026?

Around €600 a day at the median, with a range of €500 to €950 according to the 2026 Freelance Solution grid. A junior sits closer to €480 to €650, a senior Kubernetes or SRE engineer between €850 and €1,200.

How much does a freelance DevOps earn per month?

At €700 a day and 18 billed days, revenue reaches €12,600, but net pay depends on status, fees and days without a mission. At the WEEPO Barometer median, €10,260 of monthly revenue leaves €4,200 net.

Can a junior freelance DevOps get started?

It is possible, and the grid has a junior line starting at €480. Still, it helps to have a few months of production experience, because a client expects a freelancer to be autonomous from day one.

Which status should a freelance DevOps choose?

The micro-entreprise suits a start but caps at €83,600 for services. The SASU gives more room, without unemployment insurance. Wage portage has no cap and brings employee protection, with management fees.

Can you work as a freelance DevOps in wage portage?

Yes. The WEEPO 2026 Barometer counts 85% tech profiles among ported consultants, and WEEPO accepts day rates from €300 excluding VAT. The simulator estimates your net pay before you decide.
