Raison Sociale: Meaning, Examples and Freelance Guide

You're drafting the articles of your SASU and the form asks for a "raison sociale". The term shows up on invoices, contracts and payslips, yet it's rarely explained without legal jargon.

The raison sociale is the official name of a French company, the one that identifies it in its articles of association, its contracts and on its invoices. People also say "denomination sociale". It's mandatory for every company, including a consultant's SASU or EURL.

What is a raison sociale: the plain definition

The raison sociale is the name under which a company registers and signs contracts. According to service-public.gouv.fr, this name is called the dénomination sociale. The partners choose it freely and together, before the articles are written.

You'll also see the misspelling "raison social", wrong but heavily typed into Google. The meaning doesn't change: it's the company's name, not its manager's name or its brand.

What does raison sociale mean for a civil-law company?

Strictly speaking, service-public keeps the term for sociétés civiles, while SAS, SASU, SARL and EURL have a dénomination sociale. In daily life both words point to the same thing: the name of the company.

A raison sociale is a name followed or preceded by the legal form. The rule comes from service-public: the name must sit right next to the legal form, as initials or in full. SA, SAS and SARL also state their share capital.

SASUAtelier Nova Conseil SASUFree name, legal form attached
EURLDupont Data EURLThe partner's own name can be used
SASLumen Cloud SASShare capital stated with the name
SARLCabinet Morel Projets SARLShare capital stated with the name

These names are made up for illustration. A founder's or partner's name can be used, and the company can keep it after that person leaves.

Raison sociale, trade name and sign: what's the difference?

The raison sociale is the company's legal name, the trade name is what you sell under, and the sign is what hangs on your premises. Per service-public, a trade name is optional but recommended and is declared to the RNE and the RCS. A trademark is protected for 10 years once filed with the INPI, at a cost of 50 to 300 euros.

What's the difference between a name and a raison sociale?

The "name" of an activity is usually its trade name, the one on a business card or a LinkedIn profile. The raison sociale sits in the articles. A freelancer can present as "Nova Conseil" while invoicing as "Atelier Nova Conseil SASU". Keep both consistent.

How to choose a company name in 4 steps

Choose the name before writing the articles, then check that it's free on Data Inpi. The company becomes the owner of its name at registration. Better to avoid a name already taken, which would force you to start over.

1. Check that the name is available

Searching Data Inpi is free. A deeper similarity search exists at the INPI, but it's paid.

The name alone isn't enough: "Nova Conseil" becomes "Nova Conseil SASU" in the articles.

3. Keep the same name everywhere

The Commercial Code frames the details shown on business papers (articles R123-237 to R123-238). A different name across the contract, the invoice and the Kbis makes a client hesitate, and so does their accounting team.

4. Change it later if needed

A change goes through an amendment of the articles, with the majority of partners agreeing. In a SASU you decide alone, but the formality still applies.

A freelancer's company name: SASU, EURL or micro-entreprise?

A freelancer who sets up a SASU or an EURL must choose a company name; a micro-entrepreneur or a salaried consultant under portage doesn't. According to INSEE, 1,165,800 businesses were created in France in 2025, including 758,600 micro-entrepreneurs, about 65%. The status comes before the name.

If you're torn, our comparison SASU or EURL, which status to choose lays out the gaps in charges and pay. The guide to the EURL, its tax regime and setup helps if you work alone with a single partner. And if the micro-entreprise appeals to you, read SASU or auto-entrepreneur first.

A micro-entrepreneur has no articles to write, so no dénomination sociale to pick. Check service-public for the rules specific to that status before declaring a trade name. For the big picture, see how to choose a status when going freelance.

For a consultant, wage portage means no company name to choose

Under wage portage you create no company, so there's no company name to choose and no articles to draft. You sign an employment contract with the portage company, which invoices your client and pays you a salary. It's one option among others, and its cost can be compared with a SASU.

At WEEPO, the WEEPO wage portage company charges 3% management fees, capped at 550 euros per mission, plus 2% of additional fees (professional liability insurance, occupational health, factoring and financial guarantee, CVAE).

Take a consultant billing the median revenue of the WEEPO 2026 Barometer (20,000 payslips), that is 10,260 euros a month. The 3% management fee comes to 307.80 euros, well under the 550 euro cap, and the 2% additional fees to 205.20 euros. In the same Barometer, the median daily rate is 526 euros and the median net salary 4,200 euros a month. To size your own case, try to simulate your salary under wage portage.

The trade-off is simple. A company gives you a name, articles and bookkeeping to manage. Portage spares you those steps, in exchange for fees proportional to your revenue.

Mistakes that cost money with a company name

The three most common mistakes are a name already in use, a missing legal form and a mix-up with the trade name. The first invites a dispute. The second makes the articles irregular. The third blurs your invoices. A ten-minute check before registration avoids all three.

Frequently asked questions

What is a company's raison sociale?

It's the official name of the company, set in its articles and shown with its legal form. It identifies the company in contracts, invoices and administrative procedures.

How do I find my raison sociale?

Open your articles: the name must appear there, attached to the legal form. It also shows on your business papers, so on your invoices.

Can I use my own name as a raison sociale?

Yes. A founder's or partner's name can be used, and the company can keep it after that person leaves.

Can a raison sociale be changed?

Yes, through an amendment of the articles decided with the agreement of the majority of partners or shareholders.

Does a consultant under wage portage have a raison sociale?

No, because they don't create a company. The portage company employs them and invoices the client under its own name.

Key takeaways

  • The raison sociale is the official name of the company, mandatory once a company exists.
  • It's chosen before the articles, with the legal form attached.
  • It differs from the trade name, the sign and the trademark.
  • A micro-entrepreneur has no articles to write, so no dénomination sociale.
  • Under wage portage no company is created, so the question doesn't arise.
