How to Find Freelance Missions in France: 5 Channels 2026

The hard part isn't knowing how to code, run a project or migrate a cloud stack. It's filling your calendar. A new consultant wonders where the first mission will come from, and someone with ten years of experience asks the same thing the day a contract ends.

How do you find freelance missions? Combine three sources: a well-kept network (former colleagues, LinkedIn), one or two IT-focused platforms and a few intermediaries such as IT service companies. Then keep the channel that earns you the best day rate and drop the rest.

Are you a consultant or freelancer? Before answering an offer, estimate your net pay from your day rate with the WEEPO salary simulator.

How to find freelance missions: the 5 channels that work

Five channels cover most of the IT market: your personal network, platforms, IT service companies and firms, direct outreach, and missions available through wage portage. Each has its own pace. Your network costs time but no commission, while a platform fills an empty calendar fast and takes a share of your revenue.

Your network and referrals

Write to former colleagues, past managers and the clients of your last mission. Three lines are enough: what you're looking for, from when, with which stack. Many IT missions close without any tender, through a simple exchange between two people who trust each other. A freelancer who left a good impression often receives offers without asking.

Platforms to find freelance missions

Free-Work, Malt, FreelanceRepublik or LittleBig Connection give you access to IT freelance mission listings without prospecting. The catch is a commission. The MAIF freelance guide notes about 10% excluding VAT on each mission for Malt. Polish your profile: detailed stack, stated day rate, availability date and two results with numbers.

IT service companies and intermediaries

An IT service company places consultants with its clients and keeps a margin on your day rate. It's fast, and sometimes the only way into certain large accounts. To compare that model with an independent status, our guide on wage portage vs IT service companies shows what each leaves in your pocket.

LinkedIn and direct outreach

Share one lesson learned a week, comment on decision-makers' posts, message project directors directly: it's slow at first, then it speeds up. Our most profitable freelance prospecting tips cover the method. Once a contact replies, a clear freelance business proposal wins you a meeting.

Missions available through wage portage

Portage doesn't replace the search for clients, but some portage companies publish missions. Browse the wage portage missions published by WEEPO to see which profiles and day rates are in demand.

Where to find freelance missions depending on your situation

The right channel depends on how urgent it is and how strong your network is. With one month ahead, bet on platforms and IT service companies. If you're preparing to leave a permanent job six months out, invest in your network and LinkedIn: slower, but better paid in the end.

Freelance missions in Paris and remote

According to the WEEPO 2026 Barometer, built on 20,000 payslips of portage consultants, 69% of them work in the Paris region. Paris freelance missions are everywhere, but remote missions widen the field: filter your searches by work mode, not only by city.

How much does a mission pay? The calculation to do before signing

A mission is judged on the day rate after all costs, not on the advertised rate. The WEEPO 2026 Barometer shows a median day rate of €526, with half of consultants between €450 and €600, and a median monthly revenue of €10,260.

Take a consultant at €526 a day who bills 20 days: €10,520 in revenue. If a platform takes about 10% excluding VAT, the commission reaches €1,052 before contributions. Your reference rate and the freelance day rate calculation deserve attention before you pick a channel, as does converting it into net salary from a day rate.

Competition is real: according to Insee (Insee Première no. 2092, January 2026), 758,600 micro-entrepreneurs registered in 2025 out of 1,165,800 business creations. A sharp positioning matters more than sending more applications.

What changes for a consultant or freelancer in wage portage?

In wage portage you still find your clients and set your price, but the portage company handles the service contract, invoicing and payslip. The French digital labour code states that anyone with the expertise, qualification and autonomy to look for their own clients can be a portage employee.

In practice you keep a freelancer's freedom and gain employee status. At WEEPO, fees are 3% management fees, capped at €550 per mission, plus 2% additional fees (professional liability insurance, occupational health, factoring and financial guarantee, CVAE). Median tenure in portage is 29 months in the Barometer: it isn't a transition status for everyone. If a mission stops, the guide on wage portage between missions explains the gap period. Frequently asked questions

How do you find freelance missions without an IT service company?

Use your network, LinkedIn and direct outreach to project directors. Platforms are another route, at the price of a commission. It takes more outreach, but you keep the whole negotiated day rate.

Where can you find freelance missions as a beginner?

Start with former colleagues and clients, then add a general platform to land a first client. Highlight one concrete result rather than a list of technologies.

Which site is best to find freelance missions?

For IT, Free-Work, Malt, FreelanceRepublik and LittleBig Connection are the examples cited by MAIF. Test two at most and track the replies before adding more.

Can you find a mission while in wage portage?

Yes, that is the principle: the portage employee searches and negotiates their own missions, the portage company handles the rest. There is no guaranteed mission, hence the value of a savings buffer.

Do you need a platform to land a first client?

No. Many consultants find their first client through their network. A platform speeds up the start, but it isn't mandatory.

Key takeaways

  • Combine network, platforms and one intermediary rather than relying on a single channel.
  • Count the commission (about 10% excluding VAT on some platforms, per MAIF) in your day rate.
  • A median day rate of €526 among WEEPO portage consultants gives you a benchmark.
  • In wage portage you find your clients, the portage company handles the admin.
  • Test your day rate with the simulator before signing.
